Hina Doll House
Introduction
Within the collection at the Peabody Essex Museum was a Hina Doll House which had been disassembled sometime in the 1970’s and had remained in storage. In 2023 I was brought in to re-assemble the house and conserve the house, dolls, and accessories as needed. The large doll house was in multiple pieces, the main house and the smaller house were mostly intact, while the middle section, walkways and stairs were all in pieces. Because it would eventually go out on display I proposed a permanent mount for the house to sit on, while the dolls and accessories could be stored separately, then arranged to the curator’s specifications when it went on display. Once the mount was made, the house could be reconstructed on it, and minor conservation treatments conducted. For the most part everything in the collection was stable and needed little to no work. The details of the project are described in the treatment report.
